Multi-User Editing with Aximmetry

Author:

Introduction

This document discusses how an Unreal scene can be edited live, even by multiple users at once, in a Multi-Machine Environment, using the Multi-User Editing Unreal plugin.

Preparation

The basic multi-user editing workflow is described in Unreal's documentation of the plugin: https://dev.epicgames.com/documentation/en-us/unreal-engine/getting-started-with-multi-user-editing-in-unreal-engine
IMPORTANT: This document extends the specific paragraphs of the referred document above, with extra instructions on how to set up multi-user editing to work in Aximmetry.

2 - Set Up Multiple Computers

Make sure the computer(s) running Aximmetry also have a separate copy of the project.

3 - Start a Session

Note the Server and Session name. These will be referred to as [Server] and [Session] in the next step.

5 - Join the Session

As mentioned in "9 - On Your Own," the project can be set up to automatically connect to a default session on a default server.
We will use this method to connect from Unreal running in Aximmetry.

Open the project in the editor and change the following settings in Project Settings / Plugins / Multi-User Editing:
Auto Connect = true
Default Server URL = [Server]
Default Session Name = [Session]

You might have to use the Set as Default button to apply the settings due to a bug in Unreal Editor (5.6).
We recommend restarting the editor and checking that the settings were applied successfully.
After the project settings are set up, you can close the editor.

Starting the Session

Load the project in Aximmetry and set the Connection to Editor Data.

Now you should immediately see your changes in Aximmetry when you edit the project in Unreal Editor (which is connected to the same session from a different computer).

NOTE: Changing the Multi-User Editing settings is only necessary in the copy of the project that will be loaded by Aximmetry.
NOTE: You can change the rest of the settings in Multi-User Editing if you want.
